- On NewsNation, he said he wants to "build something special" at a small, nonpartisan network.
Chris Cuomo announced on Tuesday that he is joining the little-known network NewsNation, mounting a TV comeback after being fired by CNN.
Cuomo appeared on the network's 8 p.m. show, "Dan Abrams Live," to share the new role, eight months after being terminated by CNN.
"I'm going to come to NewsNation and I want to build something special here," he said, adding that he had decided not to go back to "what people see as the 'big game'" media
"I don't think I can make a difference there," he said.
According to Variety, NewsNation's primetime programming gets 50,000 viewers per night on average — just over 2% of the 2 million nightly viewers Cuomo drew for CNN in 2020.
And, despite warm words for his former network on a recently-launched podcast, per The Daily Beast, he's still seeking $125 million in damages.
According to an arbitration brief filed in March, Cuomo says he was wrongfully terminated and wants the remaining $15 million on his contract, as well as a further $110 million in what he says are lost future earnings.
Cuomo was fired in December after it emerged that he leveraged his media contacts to help his brother — then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo — navigate sexual-assault allegations.
Cuomo had effectively recused himself from covering the story, citing a potential conflict of interest. The network initially defended Cuomo's actions, but later said "additional information" came to light which prompted his firing.
Speaking on Tuesday night, Cuomo said he wanted to work with "insurgent media" rather than major networks or what he called "fringe," hyper-partisan networks.
Dan Abrams, the show's host, also asked about a sexual-misconduct allegation made about him, as reported in The New York Times soon after the firing.
"None of this happened," Cuomo told Abrams, according to Deadline.
